JANITZIO

Some outsiders come to fish at Janitzio, where Zirahuen, an indigenous man with exclusive rights, kills one of them in a fight. Manuel, a speculator, ignores Don Pablo's warnings and exploits the locals, imposing unfair prices. When he complains, Zirahuen is imprisoned, and Manuel offers to release him if Erendira, his girlfriend, spends a few days with him. After getting out, Zirahuen discovers the truth, kills Manuel, and forgives Erendira. However, Tacha, jealous, incites the village, which stones Erendira to death according to tradition. Zirahuen sinks into the lake alongside her body.
