In 1963 Oregon, Randle McMurphy feigns mental illness to escape a work farm after statutory rape charges and is transferred to a psychiatric institution. He clashes with the controlling Nurse Ratched, befriends fellow patients, and challenges the nurse's authority through rebellious acts. After a pivotal Christmas party and subsequent tragedy, McMurphy attacks Ratched and undergoes lobotomy. Chief Bromden, a fellow patient, mercifully ends McMurphy's suffering and escapes institutional control.
