Jack Torrance accepts a winter caretaker position at the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado. Upon arrival, he learns a previous caretaker murdered his family a decade earlier. As Jack's mental state deteriorates over the winter, supernatural forces manipulate him toward violence. His son Danny possesses psychic abilities to sense the hotel's malevolent presence. The film culminates in a violent confrontation that ends with Jack freezing to death in the hotel's hedge maze.
